A big thank you to David Richards for another fantastic tour of Gettysburg! I learn something new each and every time we go there. Mrs. Gutting took some detailed notes to have an even more comprehensive tour next year! The students learned about Pickett's Charge, Devil's Den and of course Little Round Top and how those events and places within the battle turned the course of history for the United States. But we didn't just learn about history. We were able to study landforms, rock formations and we were even able to see the dinosaur Raptor footprints in two rocks! Enjoy the beautiful pictures taken by our very own Ms. Costas. They are amazing!

We had an exciting kickoff to our Civil War theme this week. After visiting the "Pratt St. Riots" on Monday we turned our attention to Antietam. All of our field trips are done in chronological order. Antietam took place a few months after the Pratt St Riots in September of 1862. Students conducted research on not only the battle itself but also observered Science "in action" all around us. Ecosystems, soil coservation, physical and chemical weathering and the water cycle are just some examples. Ask you children about the different rocks they saw in Antietam and Gettysburg, as well! A huge thank you to Mr. Phil McLaughlin for another fantastic tour of Antietam! We end the school year with our Civil War Theme. (1861-1865) Each student has already been given their Civil War Project/Battlefield Tour. The two trips we have scheduled for certain is our trips to the Pratt St. Riots and Gettysburg. We will still possibly go to Antietam. Many of our students went to Antietam with me last summer for B.E.E.S. Much of their project they have they will completing in the field at the battlefields. Most of the rest can be done in the classroom. Very little of it needs to be completed at home. Each student must have their Battlefield Tour research project with them to join us on the trips! Don't lose them! Students learn about canons used during the Civil War from Mr. Richards. For the last five years Patterson Park students have been lucky enough to have David Richards as our tour guide of Gettysburg National Park. Mr. Richards brings the battle "to life" for adults and children alike. Thanks to his amazing tours our students have an amazing understanding of the hardships soldiers went through to preserve the Union and end slavery in our country. Tour of U.S. Capitol We will be going on our final field trip on Tuesday, June 5th. We always end the 5th grade year with a tour of the National Mall. We start the day at the Lincoln Memorial and end at the U.S. Capitol Building. Along the way we stop at the Smithonsian Museum of American History where we learn about all the different eras of American history in one place! There are many amazing artifacts there including George Washington's uniform, the desk that Robert E. Lee signed signed the surrender papers at the end of the Civil War, and the last Huey Helicopter flown in Vietnam. Just a reminder that students can present their Science Fair projects any day next week. This is a big grade so make sure you ask for help is you need some! There are some poster boards here at the school if you have not purchased one yet. Our Civil War projects are due May 22nd.
Last week we went on three very exciting field trips based on the Civil War. The Pratt St. Riots, Antietam Battlefield, and Gettysburg Battlefield trips were very exciting! Students conducted both history and science research on all of their trips. Click on the Photos tab to see what we did! We are also looking forward to a personal tour of the Japanese Destroyer which will be at the Broadway Pier this Friday.
